I Can't Wait for Saturday Night

about

It's no secret to my old friends that I love both Leon Russell, and Dr John. I love the boogie, and this one just came to me in one sitting. words and music together. I love when that happens. It's a homage to my first days dating my wife Shannon, and the excitement that comes from that early courtship.

I put an awful piano track down, played some bouncing bass, cranked the Les Paul with the awesome Dr. Robert pedal (made in Spain by Aclam), and sent it to Joe. Joe brought me back from Nawlin's boogie drums with a hint of Revolution, which clearly Phil and I were riffing on in the opening. Phil added some great fills on the pre-chorus.

Next up, Phil Madeira, late of the Red Dirt Boys backing Emmylou Harris, and bandmate to my old fiends Brian Owens and Will Kimbrough hit the piano hard and gave me a cross between a Garth Hudson and Leon Russell feel. I was well eager to lose my awful piano parts.

Denise was the icing on this cake and nailed it. This may be one of my favorite songs I have written so far... and Joe also brought back a bunch of hand claps that made it sound like we had an audience in the studio, "Shelter People" style, and surprised me with it.

Perfect ending.

lyrics

Well, it’s a fine spring day to be going for a walk in the park
And I’m gonna try to find a way to keep ya out til way after dark
And when the sun go down and we out on the town we can go
Maybe we drink a little, dance a little boogie at the rock and roll show
Thinking about nothing but the fun we’ll have, spending my money but it ain’t so bad

Well alright, I can’t wait for Saturday night
Well alright, you know I can’t wait for Saturday night
It’s all right

Every time you near me, how my heart start to tremble in fear
That somebody gonna woo you so, I wanna make it perfectly clear
How I need you, I can please you, and I wanna be your forever man
You know there ain’t nobody ever gonna love ya like the way that I can
When we laying down the boogie in our dancing shoes
Gonna tell you that I love ya, I got nothing to lose

Well alright, I can’t wait for Saturday night
Well alright, you know I can’t wait for Saturday night
It’s all right

You know I never ever thought that I would stand a chance
to find a woman like you start a new romance
Started thinking ‘bout the future and forgot my past, I know that we got something that was
built to last – uh huh

Well when the rock and roll music keeps a playing at a quarter to two
Gonna slip the band a fifty cuz I wanna keep dancing with you
When we close the joint down and the man say that we gotta go
We’ll hit the all-night diner, or an after-hours club that I know
I need to find the words to tell the things I’ll say
Cuz I wanna love ya baby each and every day

Well alright, I can’t wait for Saturday night
Well alright, you know I can’t wait for Saturday night
It’s all right

Well alright, I can’t wait for Saturday night
Well alright, you know I can’t wait for Saturday night
out of sight dynamite it’s alright
